The charming and historical town of Graaff-Reinet, in its beautiful setting, is justly described as the "Gem of the Karoo".

In this noteworthy place, Parsonage Street is particularly noteworthy in two respects. It has more national monuments than any other street in South Africa and it is also known as South Africa's most beautiful street.

With historic Reinet House, built in 1805 as a parsonage but to-day the Graaf-Reinet museum, and the old Drostdy (magistracy), now a hotel, facing each other at opposite ends, elegant and tasteful buildings march down either side of the tree-lined street.

One house away from the museum is Pioneers, itself a national monument and, since 2001, a restaurant.

This immensely pleasing restaurant is not only itself part of the town's history but is full of interesting photographs illustrating Graaff-Reinet's past and present.

Under the present ownership since 2008, Pioneers is not just a brilliant place to eat but has also become noted for being a stimulating venue with its Ladies or Students Nights, Karaoke Evenings and the live Jazz group on Friday nights.

Depending on your preference, you may choose between four distinct dining rooms, a wide stoep, a cosy pub and a beer garden.

Pioneers is pet- and wheelchair- friendly.
